National Debt

National Debt by President

The total U.S. federal debt at the start and end of each presidential administration, the dollar amount added, and the percent change — joined from official Treasury debt readings.

Figures show the total public debt near the start and end of each administration, the amount added during the term, and the percent change. The debt added during a presidency reflects spending and revenue decisions made by both the executive branch and Congress, as well as economic conditions — it is not attributable to a president alone.
